Will Prior will give an illustrated talk exploring the countertenor voice, repertoire, history and role before his song recital at Since Alfred Deller revived the recital repertoire for the voice in the mid 20th century we have seen such major British singers like James Bowman and MIchael Chance make big international careers singing not only in Baroque opera (where some of the great roles were written for countertenor by Handel and Gluck) but also in such roles as Oberon in Britten's Middsummer's Night dream. Its great that the new George Parker Memorial Song Recital series which has been endowed by a gift from his family to the Roseland Music Society.;
George Parker was a leading baritone of the mid 20th century a friend of John Ireland (and a dedicatee of many of his songs, along with other composer of the era Moeran, Martin Shaw., ELisabeth Poston He first visited the Roseland to take part in the Falmouth Opera Group's ground breaking opera productions in the 1930s - which included the first British performances of Mozart's Idomeneo - organised by Maisie and Radford who lived at St Anthony in Roseland.
