We have not been able to agree on whether Yulia's anglicised name should be used - it's Julia on the posters but as Tim has corresponded with her primarily as Yulia, that has crept into programme notes. It also gives a better impression of how Russian she is. She is the real deal in terms of Russian concert pianists! In an online interview she said 'I think all the great Russian pianists like Richter, Gilels, Sofronitsky, Yudina, Ashkenazy have influenced my perception and interpretation of the music I play. Listening to their performances on a near-daily basis in Russia inevitably left a strong impression on my musical taste!'. Spotted early by Rostropovich whose foundation supported her and with whom she had a long working relationship, she went on to study in Berlin and at the Royal College of Music in London. Naming Rostropovich, Oistrach and Rattle as well as many pianists including Rachmaninov, Rubenstein and Horovitz in a long list of her favourite musicians, she also says musicians should 'Listen to singers – instrumentalists often forget that there needs to be breathing in our phrases too.' I am very sad to be missing it! I have handed over the floats and Sum-up machine to Brenda. She, Tim, Corinna and Peter will be opening up the Hall and the bar at 6.45. Until 7.15 there's a free bar. Come early to reminisce with others about your highlights of the 24/25 series and purchase membership at a discount for the 25/26 season which will be announced on the night. I think for me, the beauty of Alysia Hanshaw's soprano and the added treat in that February concert of Jay Carroll's Lizst arrangements of Schubert was the stand out. Like many I did wonder about a voice recital and perhaps, if I hadn't been running it, I might have given that one a miss. I should know better! A note for members of the RMS and visitors to the website, the 7-piece band, 'Hejira - celebrating Joni Mitchell' is going to be performing at at St Petroc’s, Bodmin on the Friday 6th June. Taking on the role of Joni Mitchell will be the outstanding vocalist Hattie Whitehead - who not only pulls off the qualities of Mitchell’s singing…but also plays guitar like Joni, involving all sorts of Mitchell’s ‘open tunings’. Hattie grew up, surrounded by world-class musicians - being the daughter of the brilliant saxophonist, Tim Whitehead. Aside from mastering Joni’s vocal mannerisms, Hattie is a great singer/songwriter in her own right: she won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2016 and has subsequently had hundreds of thousands of streams of her original works listened to. The material that this band performs is drawn primarily from Mitchell's masterpiece live album, ‘Shadows And Light’. The songs on that album are beautiful, exciting and, as always with Joni, totally touching in the poignancy of the lyrics. Importantly, as with the original personnel, the band - though comprised of great and highly experienced jazz musicians - is there with the primary objective of serving the music! As it was Joni Mitchell’s 80th birthday in 2023, this being followed by her being awarded a Grammy in 2024 – we feel that there couldn’t be a better time for celebrating the major works of, arguably, the greatest singer-songwriter of the 20th century. Expect an evening of Joni’s ‘great songs’, such as ‘Amelia’, ‘Woodstock’, 'A Case Of You’, ’Song For Sharon’, 'Edith And The Kingpin’ ‘Hejira', 'Black Crow' etc.! Dear All, We are nearly there - at the blue riband event for this season! I went down to St Just yesterday and it is, as so carefully planned, at its glorious loveliest! I know that some of our members prefer to pay by cash at the door. It would be wise to send me a message now reserving tickets if you intend to do that - you could always cancel on the day by emailing again if plans have to change. We have postered a wider area and sent out press releases. Tickets are already selling well which is a huge relief since our audiences for the last two concerts (which were easily within my top five RMS concerts to date) have been very happy but a bit small. We have quite a hefty performers' fee to cover on this one! Don't forget that the ticket includes the pre-concert talk by Rosamund Bartlett at 5.30. If you are not one of the first 40 who reserved their front pew places, as an extra incentive to come along to that, I will allow you to grab a good spot before we throw everyone out to prepare for the main event. We aim to have the doors (and bar) open before 7pm. A cushion would make a good reserved notice and, as always for pews, you might well be glad of one. I have sent out separate emails to the people who have already paid for their tickets directly via BACs as well as the people who have booked supper at Renwicks. We have managed to get the minimum 20 required but I can add to that number up until Thursday 8th. £12 for a simple beef or vegetarian lasagne and salad. Dear Members and Friends, On Friday 9th May, the Brodsky Quartet’s Roseland Music Society concert at St Just Church will be preceded at 5.30pm by a 45-minute talk given by Rosamund Bartlett. She is a BBC Proms presenter and writes on Russian literature, music and art. Her books include Wagner & Russia and Tolstoy: A Russian life and she has translated Anna Karenina for Oxford World Classics. Thanks to a generous donation from the Golden Bottle Trust, her talk is free to concert ticket holders. For those attending, Phoebe Renwick at Renwick’s café, next to the new Interpretive Centre by the church car park, has offered to provide supper between the talk and the concert. People will obviously want to be back at the church in good time to enjoy something from the bar and get a good pew (if they haven’t used the members’ reservation opportunity) so it needs to be something easy to serve. Her proposal is to offer Lasagne (either beef or vegetarian) and salad for £12 a head ordered and paid for in advance. She will be able to provide hot and cold drinks and ice creams for an additional cost on the night but will need at least 20 diners to justify extending her opening hours. In case you need further encouragement, read what Krysia Osostowicz, of the Brodsky Quartet, has to say about their programme: “The Brodsky Quartet and I hugely look forward to our concert tour of beautiful Cornish venues. It grew from Tim Smithies' bold invitation to us to perform a large-scale string quartet by Shostakovich for the Roseland Music Society at St Just in Roseland Church on 9th May. Although Shostakovich's 8th quartet is the best known, we've chosen his 9th: one of the most exciting works in the entire repertoire, and one of our favourite ones to play. Audiences love it too, even those who fear they might not like Shostakovich. Opening with a gentle, sighing melody, punctuated with mischievous marches and distant trumpet fanfares, the music travels through a varied landscape - including a playful tribute to William Tell, a desolate lament and a ceremonial folk dance – before culminating in a tsunami of energy which is both terrifying and exhilarating. None of this could have happened without the inspiration of Debussy's ground-breaking string quartet of 1899. Boldly going where no composer had gone before, Debussy created a new sound-world full of oriental colours and wave-like movement, with textures reminiscent of the great murmurations of birds swooping and wheeling through the Cornish skies. Our concert begins with Haydn, known as the Father of the string quartet - a ground-breaking composer from an earlier time, with every new work full of surprises, experiments, exquisite moments and musical jokes. Joking aside, it's worth reflecting on the historical context of Shostakovich's work, written under the oppressive shadow of the Soviet regime, with the composer often in fear for his own life, but always seeking to support and protect his friends, family and colleagues. As a friend wrote to me recently: "Shostakovich's music seems to be imbued with these bitter experiences and at the same time shows the most enormous resilience". Shostakovich's quartets represent his most personal utterances; and for us, working on them in these very worrying times, it is an inspiration to experience his courage in the face of tyranny, and the way in which he expresses so many aspects of the human condition. Personally, I am delighted to be together with the Brodsky Quartet, which I had admired for many years before being invited to join them in 2021. The quartet is now in its sixth decade and still going strong, travelling all over the world. Last year we visited Brazil, China and New Zealand, as well as playing in London and Dublin with Elvis Costello.” I hope to see many of you there, Emma | |
